A missing key, a key that spins freely and a mailbox door that will not stay closed are different problems. Describe which one affects your box: the fault may involve the key, lock, cam or the little door itself.
A key remains: when is copying an option?
If your household or building manager has an authorised copy, have its profile and condition checked before key duplication. Reproduction depends on the model and any ordering restrictions. A mailbox key, an electronic badge and a shared-access key do not automatically follow the same process.
A spare does not disable a lost key. If you are concerned that someone else could access the mail, say so: regaining entry and changing who can open the box are separate needs.
No key remains: preparing authorised access
Do not force the door or put objects through the mail slot. Give the address, box number, whether it is an individual box or part of a communal bank, and who can provide access to the hall. Confirm the required proof of your right to access it when calling.
The opening method, condition of the box and availability of a suitable part determine what work is possible. Replacing the lock does not always mean replacing the whole mailbox; a distorted door needs a separate assessment.
A spinning key or a door that will not close
Explain whether the key turns without operating the latch, the lock body moves or the door rubs. These symptoms alone do not identify the faulty part. If the box is already open, leave the mechanism accessible for inspection without removing fixings. Do not close a faulty door just to reproduce the problem.
Why check the cam and fixing?
Manufacturer BURG describes a mailbox lock as a cylinder operating a small lever, secured by a nut or clip depending on the model (German source). The illustration shows this check on an already open box.
The BURG-WÄCHTER BK 92 Point, for example, is supplied with several levers. That does not make it suitable for every mailbox. Confirm the reference, dimensions, fixing and cam position before ordering; a similar appearance from the front is insufficient.
Communal buildings: keeping other entrances working
For a bank of boxes, contact the property manager to identify the affected boxes, permissions and keys to hand over. If the same key opens the entrance or garage, ask whether the existing system can preserve that arrangement. Useful photos and checks after repair
A view of the front and any visible reference helps prepare the visit. If the door is already open, a view of the back of the lock may help too. Hide names, mail and other personal information; do not send detailed photographs of key cuts.
