Moving: Should You Change the Locks?

You've just been handed the keys to your new home in Brussels. Simple question, too often overlooked answer: do you know how many copies of those keys are out there? Former tenant, agency, family, neighbours, cleaner… The only way to be sure is to start fresh. Here's why and how.

Why change the lock when moving in

When you take over a home, you also inherit its entire key history. Even with a seller or landlord acting in good faith, no one can guarantee that no copy is floating around. Changing the cylinder (or lock) on move-in day means taking back full control of access to your home. It's a small security step, at the exact moment it's easiest to take.

Change the cylinder or the whole lock?

In most cases, replacing the cylinder is enough: it's what controls opening with the key. If the lock body works well, there's no need to change everything. Tenant or owner: who decides, who pays?

If you're an owner-occupier, do as you wish: change the cylinder without hesitation. If you're a tenant, changing the lock affects part of the property: notify the owner and keep the old cylinder to refit it when you leave (you'll return the home to its original state). Moving is the ideal time for a security review, with no emergency or stress:

• Choose a certified anti-burglary cylinder (anti-pick, anti-drill) rather than an entry-level model.
• If the door is weak, consider reinforcement or a multi-point lock.
• Take the chance to have the right number of keys cut from an original, not a copy of a copy.
• If you rent short-term (Airbnb), a smart lock simplifies access management.
