Key copying in Brussels: what you need to know
Copying a key in Brussels: standard keys, patented keys, ownership card, security keys. Where, how, and why some keys cannot be copied just anywhere.
Getting a key copied seems trivial — until the moment the local cobbler tells you "this one, I can't copy it". Not all keys are reproduced the same way, and that's a good thing: it's precisely what protects your home. Here's what to know before getting a copy made in Brussels.
The three main families of keys
1. The standard flat key
This is the classic key, with a simple cut, copied in a few minutes at any cobbler or hypermarket. Convenient and cheap — but that's also its limit: anyone can make a copy, without authorisation. For a letterbox or a cellar, that's fine. For your front door, it's a weak point.
2. The patented key (with ownership card)
Security brands such as Fichet, Bricard, Mul-T-Lock or Picard protect their keys with a patent. Reproduction is only possible on presentation of an ownership card (handed over when you buy the lock), and only by an approved professional. The major advantage: no one can copy your key without your knowledge — not a former tenant, a neighbour, or a passing tradesperson.
3. The high-protection security key
Beyond the patent, some keys incorporate complex mechanical features (reversible keys, ball-bearing keys, track keys) that make wild copying virtually impossible. It's the recommended level for front doors, buildings and businesses. Discover the brands we handle on our security keys page.
The ownership card: what it's for
The ownership card is the "passport" of your patented key. It proves you are indeed the legitimate holder and authorises ordering copies. Keep it safe, separate from your keys. If you lose it, reproduction becomes complicated (and sometimes impossible without going back to the manufacturer). Conversely, it's the card that prevents unauthorised copies — hence its value for your security.
How long does a copy take?
- Standard flat key: immediate, cut on the spot.
- Patented key "in service": often quickly available if the brand is managed by the professional.
- Key "on order": a manufacturing lead time is needed (the key comes from the manufacturer). The delay depends on the brand and model.
Our tips before getting a copy made
- Have the copy cut from an original, never from a copy of a copy: with each generation, precision degrades and the key eventually "catches" or breaks (see our guide on a broken key in the lock).
- After a move, don't just make copies: rather replace the cylinder to start fresh with keys only you hold (see changing locks when moving).
- For a short-term rental or staff, patented keys (or a smart lock) prevent wild copying.
