After a burglary: securing your home and knowing the right steps
Coming home to a forced door and ransacked rooms is deeply unsettling. The sense of violation is real, and thinking clearly in that moment is difficult. We attend burglary call-outs across Brussels on a regular basis — Schaerbeek, Forest, Anderlecht, Ixelles — and the advice we give every time is the same: follow a clear sequence of steps, and do not rush.
First: call the police
Do not touch anything before officers arrive. Every surface you wipe, every drawer you close, every object you move could destroy evidence — fingerprints, tool marks, DNA traces. We understand the urge to check what is missing, but the police need the scene intact.
- Ring 101 (local police) or 112 (European emergency number).
- If there is any chance the intruders are still inside, do not enter. Wait outside or with a neighbour until the police clear the property.
- Note the time you discovered the break-in. This detail goes into the official report and your insurer will ask for it.
Emergency securing: do not leave a broken door overnight
Once the police have completed their inspection, your home remains exposed. A forced door or destroyed lock leaves the property accessible to anyone walking past. We carry out emergency securing: immediate cylinder replacement, lock repair or replacement, and where necessary, a temporary reinforcement solution until a new door can be fitted.
From our experience, the majority of residential burglaries in Brussels involve cylinder snapping or drilling. A cylinder that protrudes more than 3 mm beyond the door plate is an easy target. We always fit flush-mounted cylinders with anti-snap, anti-drill, and anti-pick protection — typically Mul-T-Lock, Fichet, or Bricard models.
Upgrading your security to prevent a repeat
Belgian crime statistics confirm what we see in practice: a property that has been burgled faces a higher risk of being targeted again within weeks. The intruders now know the layout and are aware you will replace stolen items with new ones. A like-for-like lock replacement is not enough.
- Upgrade to a multipoint lock (3 or 5 points) if you previously had a single-cylinder setup.
- Consider door reinforcement — a steel sheath or pivot-mounted armour plating dramatically increases resistance to forced entry.
- A cylinder guard (security escutcheon) prevents the cylinder from being gripped, snapped, or picked from the outside.
Insurance documentation
Your home insurance in Belgium typically covers emergency locksmith costs after a burglary. We provide a detailed invoice listing the nature of the intervention, every part replaced, and its reference number. Keep the police report number to hand — your insurer will request it.
