This distinction matters because it determines whether a simple bypass technique will work — and in most cases, it will.

What you should and should not do while waiting
- Check windows first — a tilted bathroom window or an open fanlight on the ground floor might save you a call. Never climb to reach upper-floor windows, though; the risk is not worth it.
- Do not try a bank card — despite what you may have seen online, sliding a card into the gap rarely works on modern doors and almost always damages the card or the door frame.
