Suspicious damage: what to do before repairs
Scratches, a bent strike plate or a loose cylinder warrant inspection. These signs alone cannot establish an attempted break-in or confirm that nobody entered. Do not test the door’s strength or dismantle its parts.
Which situation are you facing?

- The damaged door remains closed: contact the police and follow their instructions to preserve evidence. Do not clean or handle the damaged areas.
- The door will not close: tell the police and ask how to arrange securing the opening without interfering with their examination.
The Belgian Federal Police guidance (French) advises preserving the scene, documenting damage and contacting your insurer. Take photographs only when safe and without moving any components.
Information to prepare for the locksmith
Give the address, door type, whether it is open or closed, visible damage and any police instructions. Mention a shared entrance or fire door and inform the owner or building manager. Have evidence of your right to access the property available.

Repair the closing mechanism or reinforce the door?
The assessment needs to distinguish the cylinder, lock case, strike plate, frame and door leaf. A new cylinder cannot compensate for a weakened frame. Depending on the damage, repair, temporary securing or replacement may be proposed; the method and its limitations should be explained.
Door reinforcement must suit the existing assembly. A brand name or a number of locking points does not guarantee resistance on its own. Ask for the component references and the specifications of the proposed configuration. A theft prevention adviser can also help assess the property’s entrances.
Questions for your insurer
Ask which cover applies to the damage and emergency securing, what excess applies and whether approval is needed first. Reimbursement is not automatic; a security upgrade may be treated differently from reinstating the damaged door.
