Beauvechain: Five Sections and the 1st Wing Air Base

With 7,242 inhabitants (2025) over 38.57 km², Beauvechain is a French-speaking municipality of Walloon Brabant. It comprises five sections: Beauvechain, Hamme-Mille, L’Écluse, Nodebais and Tourinnes-la-Grosse. The territory features “plateaus with gentle undulations” in the north-east and a river valley with the Nethen stream in the south-west.

Military presence

The “lieutenant-colonel aviateur Charles-Roman” air base occupies about 480 hectares of municipal territory. It hosts the 1st Wing of the Belgian Air Force’s Air Component and has operated continuously since 1946, hosting several generations of fighter aircraft.

Religious heritage

The Saint-Sulpice church (1853-1860) contains Romanesque baptismal fonts among “the finest in Wallonia,” comparable to similar pieces in other Belgian churches.
