Wilka: the German standard cylinder found across Belgian and Dutch apartments
Wilka is a German lock manufacturer based in Wuppertal, producing cylinders and lock hardware since 1865. In Belgium, Wilka cylinders are extremely common in apartment buildings, especially those built or renovated according to German DIN standards. We encounter Wilka locks regularly in the eastern communes of Brussels, in Flemish Brabant, and throughout buildings constructed by developers who sourced their hardware from German suppliers.
Why Wilka is so widespread in Belgium
Belgium sits at the crossroads of French and German building traditions. While the French-speaking market gravitates toward Fichet, Bricard, and Vachette, buildings in Flanders and bilingual Brussels often use German-standard hardware. Wilka cylinders follow the DIN 18252 standard, which specifies dimensions, pin configurations, and testing requirements according to German industrial norms. This makes them directly compatible with lock bodies from other German brands like BKS, Abus, and Winkhaus.
For property managers, the appeal is practical: Wilka cylinders are affordable, widely available from German and Benelux wholesalers, and fit the standard euro-profile lock bodies used in most modern Belgian apartment doors.
No mandatory ownership card: a double-edged feature
Unlike Fichet, Bricard, or Mul-T-Lock, most Wilka cylinder models do not require a proprietary card for key duplication. Standard Wilka cylinders use a conventional key profile that any qualified locksmith can duplicate on a standard key-cutting machine. This is convenient when you need a spare key quickly, but it also means that anyone with temporary access to your key can have a copy made without your knowledge.
For tenants moving into a new apartment with a Wilka cylinder, we always recommend replacing the cylinder rather than simply getting new keys cut. Since you have no way of knowing how many copies of the previous tenant's key exist, a fresh cylinder is the only way to guarantee that you are the sole keyholder.
Wilka security cylinders: stepping up from the standard range
Wilka does manufacture higher-security cylinders with restricted key profiles that require a card for duplication. The Wilka 1400 and 1450 series offer anti-picking pins and hardened steel inserts against drilling. We install these when clients want to stay within the German DIN ecosystem but need better key control than the standard range provides.
We fit around 10 to 15 Wilka cylinders per month, split roughly evenly between standard replacements and security upgrades. The standard replacements are quick jobs, typically completed in under 20 minutes, as the euro-profile format means no modification to the door or lock body is needed.
Common issues with Wilka cylinders
- Worn springs on older models: Wilka cylinders from the 1990s and early 2000s used softer spring steel in the pin chambers. After 15 or more years, pins fail to return fully, making the key feel sticky. Replacement is the only fix.
- Incorrect length at installation: a common mistake by non-specialist installers. If the cylinder extends more than 3mm beyond the door rosette, it becomes vulnerable to plier attacks. We measure and fit to the correct DIN specification.
- Frozen cylinders in exterior doors: Wilka standard cylinders are not weather-sealed. For exterior doors or garage access, we recommend the weather-resistant variants or applying a silicone-based protectant before winter.
Wilka in the Dutch-speaking market
In the Netherlands and Dutch-speaking Belgium, Wilka has an established presence because of the shared preference for German building standards. If you live in a Flemish-built apartment and are unsure of your cylinder brand, there is a reasonable chance it is a Wilka. Bring us your key or send a photo, and we can identify the model and advise on whether replacement or upgrade is worthwhile.
