Vachette: the most common lock brand in Brussels rental properties

Vachette is a French manufacturer now part of the Assa Abloy group, the world's largest lock and access solutions company. In Brussels, Vachette cylinders are everywhere. If you rent an apartment and have not specifically chosen your lock, there is a good chance it is a Vachette. We work on Vachette locks almost daily, and they represent a large portion of our routine cylinder replacements and emergency openings.

Radial NT and NT+: the workhorses of Belgian apartment security

The Radial NT is the entry point in the Vachette security cylinder range. It uses a dimple key with radial pin placement, offering decent anti-picking and anti-bumping resistance for its price point. The NT+ adds an additional row of pins and a slightly more complex key profile, which improves resistance against manipulation techniques.

We install around 20 to 25 Vachette cylinders per month across Brussels. The vast majority are Radial NT or NT+ units going into standard multipoint lock bodies on apartment front doors. For most tenants, the NT+ represents the best balance of security and cost. It is not the highest-security cylinder on the market, but it provides credible protection at a price that landlords are willing to pay.

• Assa Abloy compatibility: as part of the Assa Abloy ecosystem, Vachette cylinders fit neatly into lock bodies from other group brands, reducing compatibility issues.

Common problems we encounter

The most frequent Vachette issue we deal with is cylinder wear in high-traffic doors. In buildings where the front door is used dozens of times per day, a Radial NT cylinder will typically last 6 to 8 years before the pins start to lose tension. You will notice the key feeling loose or needing to be jiggled to turn. At that point, replacement is the only practical solution.

Another common situation: tenants who move into a new apartment and want to re-key the lock for security reasons. With Vachette, this is straightforward. We replace the cylinder, hand over new keys, and the old tenant's keys no longer work. The lock body, handle, and door stay untouched.

When to consider upgrading from Vachette

Vachette is a solid mid-range choice, but there are situations where we recommend stepping up. Ground-floor apartments facing the street, properties left unoccupied for extended periods, or homes with valuables worth insuring at higher levels may benefit from a Mul-T-Lock or Fichet cylinder. We assess each situation individually and never push an expensive cylinder where a Vachette will do the job.
