Attempted break-in: securing your property before a second try
You come home and something looks off. Fresh scratches around the lock. The door frame slightly bent. The cylinder protruding at an odd angle or wobbling when you touch it. These are the hallmarks of an attempted burglary. The good news is that the intruders did not get in. The bad news is that your door has been weakened, and a second attempt — with the knowledge gained from the first — could succeed.
How to recognise the signs
During our post-break-in call-outs across Brussels, we consistently find the same types of evidence. Being able to spot them helps you react quickly:
- Scratches and gouges around the cylinder — shiny marks on the metal indicate the use of a picking tool or cylinder puller. This is the most frequent trace we encounter.
- Deformed or pried-open frame — a crowbar leaves a distinctive mark between the door and the door frame, usually at the level of the strike plate. The wood may be split or the metal bent outward.
- Cylinder that moves or spins freely — an attack with a wrench or gripping tool breaks the cylinder's mounting. It stays in place but no longer locks anything.
- Screws loosened or removed from the lock plate — some burglars attempt to unscrew the surface-mounted lock from the landing side.
The right steps to take immediately
First and foremost, do not touch anything. Call the police. Filing a report is essential — both for your security and for any insurance claim. Take photographs of all damage with your phone: close-ups of marks on the cylinder, the frame, the door surface. These images will be invaluable for your insurer's assessor.
Next, contact your home insurer. Most Belgian household policies cover the cost of repairs after an attempted break-in. Some policies even include emergency locksmith intervention by an approved provider. Request a claim reference number before our visit — it speeds up the process.
Emergency securing: what we do on site
The technician first assesses the extent of the damage. If the cylinder has been attacked, we replace it immediately with an anti-burglary model featuring protection against snapping, drilling, and picking. Mul-T-Lock, Fichet, and Picard cylinders offer the strongest resistance in this category.
If the frame has been deformed, we straighten it and reinforce the strike-plate area with a steel reinforcement plate or a hardened-steel anti-burglary strike. For more severe cases, a full door reinforcement can be planned for the days following.
Upgrading security after an attempt
Belgian police statistics bear out what we observe first-hand: a property that has been targeted once faces a heightened risk of a repeat attempt in the following weeks. The burglars know the door was nearly breachable. We strongly recommend going beyond a simple like-for-like repair:
- Fit a cylinder certified SKG 3-star, resistant to picking, drilling, and extraction.
- Install door armour plating if your current door is standard timber.
- Upgrade to a multipoint lock if you do not already have one — three or five locking points make crowbar attacks virtually impossible.
