Lost keys: getting inside and protecting your home
Losing your keys is stressful enough on its own, but there is a security angle that many people overlook. If your keys went missing in a public place — dropped in a restaurant in Ixelles, left on a STIB tram, fallen out at the gym — someone else may find them. And if your address is identifiable from a tag on the keyring, a business card in the same bag, or a wallet lost at the same time, your home could be at risk.
What to do straight away
Before calling a locksmith, spend a few minutes retracing your steps. Check jacket pockets, the car, your desk at work. Ring the last places you visited. In Brussels, items found on public transport are centralised by STIB at the Haren depot — it is worth a call, as keys do turn up there.
If the keys remain missing, here is what we recommend:
- Get your door opened professionally. We arrive within 30 minutes on average and achieve a damage-free opening in 95% of cases.
- Replace the cylinder if your keys were lost alongside anything that identifies your address. That is the only way to guarantee the old key can no longer open your door.
- Check your home insurance. Most Belgian household policies include locksmith assistance for lost keys. Some insurers cover the call-out and even the cylinder replacement. Keep the invoice we provide.
- File a police report if theft is suspected or confirmed. This document is sometimes required by your insurer, and it creates an official record.
Should you change the lock after losing a key?
We find that many clients hesitate, thinking the odds of someone actually using a found key are low. Let us be direct: if you lost your keys in an unknown location and your address is traceable, replacing the cylinder is the responsible decision. A standard Vachette or Wilka cylinder swap takes about 10 minutes. For multipoint locks from Fichet, Bricard, or Mul-T-Lock, allow 20 to 30 minutes. Full details are on our lock replacement page.
If you simply mislaid your keys at home or at a friend's place and they turn up the next morning, a cylinder change is not strictly necessary. Context makes all the difference.
Preventing future lockouts from lost keys
A few simple precautions make a real difference:
- Have a spare key cut and leave it with a trusted neighbour or family member. This alone eliminates the emergency element.
- Never attach an address tag to your keyring. Use a phone number if you must add identification.
- Consider a Nuki smart lock — no physical key needed, and you can unlock remotely for a neighbour or delivery driver if necessary.
