What actually happens when a door slams shut
When a door closes on its own, only the spring latch (the angled bolt that retracts when you push the handle) holds it shut. The lock has not been turned with a key, which means the deadbolt and any multipoint locking bars remain disengaged. This distinction matters because it determines whether a simple bypass technique will work — and in most cases, it will.
The bypass technique: fast and damage-free
Our technician slides a thin, flexible tool — typically a mica sheet or a purpose-built bypass strip — into the gap between the door and the frame, right at the level of the spring latch. A few controlled movements push the latch back, and the door swings open. No scratching, no drilling, no parts to replace. The entire process typically takes 5 to 10 minutes. You would struggle to tell anyone had been there at all.
What you should and should not do while waiting
- Check windows first — a tilted bathroom window or an open fanlight on the ground floor might save you a call. Never climb to reach upper-floor windows, though; the risk is not worth it.
- Do not try a bank card — despite what you may have seen online, sliding a card into the gap rarely works on modern doors and almost always damages the card or the door frame.
- Do not shoulder the door — forcing it open can warp the frame, bend the hinges, and turn a simple ten-minute job into an expensive repair. We regularly see doors damaged this way.
- Stay nearby — if you live in an apartment building, wait in the lobby or with a neighbour. We call a few minutes before arrival so you know when to come to the door.
When it is not as straightforward
From our experience, roughly one in ten slammed-door calls involves a lock with an automatic deadbolt. Models from Fichet and certain Mul-T-Lock ranges engage the deadbolt the moment the door closes, even without a key. In these cases, a simple bypass will not do the job, and we move to pick or decode the cylinder instead. This still avoids damage in the vast majority of situations, though it does take a bit longer — typically 15 to 30 minutes.
