Villers-la-Ville: Five Sections Around the Cistercian Abbey

With 11,059 inhabitants (2025) over 48.03 km², Villers-la-Ville is a French-speaking municipality of Walloon Brabant. It comprises five sections: Villers-la-Ville, Marbais, Mellery, Sart-Dames-Avelines and Tilly. The landscape alternates “fields on one side and woods on the other”, crossed by the Thyle river and railway line 140.

Villers Abbey, Cistercian jewel

The town’s identity is shaped by its Cistercian abbey, “progressively erected by monks from Clairvaux starting 1146”. The abbey became “the largest landowner in Brabant, possessing over 10,000 hectares”. After the French Revolution, it was pillaged in 1794 and sold publicly in 1797. The site received heritage protection in 1972. The ruins represent “one of the most prestigious testimonies of Cistercian monastic life”.

Beyond the abbey ruins, the commune counts:
