Tienen: Hageland’s Sugar Capital

With 36,890 inhabitants (2025) and postal code 3300, Tienen is Belgium’s sugar capital. The headquarters of the Raffinerie tirlemontoise group employs more than 1,800 people across its four Belgian refineries. The municipality groups Tienen and eight other sections: Hakendover, Goetsenhoven, Kumtich, Oorbeek, Oplinter, Bost, Hautem-Sainte-Marguerite and Vissenaken.

Sections and profile

Tienen centre : Vast Grand-Place (Grote Markt) with the Church of Notre-Dame-au-Lac, the Town Hall and the Tin Plate Hotel. Commercial and administrative quarter.

Rural sections (Hakendover, Goetsenhoven, Kumtich, Oorbeek, Oplinter, Vissenaken) : Housing mix of farms, family homes and recent subdivisions.

Beguinage and Roman site : Historic remains (Mithraeum, Grimde tumuli) south of the town.

Lock types in Tienen

The centre retains older terraced houses with lever locks, while the industrial zones around the sugar refinery and administrative offices require access-control systems and high-security locks. Rural sections mix farms (heavy locks on older doors) and recent construction with multipoint locks.

Daily interventions in Tienen

The location on railway line 36 (Brussels–Liège) with a direct station, and the proximity to Leuven, attract a significant commuter flow. The annual Suikerrock festival and weekly markets create activity peaks in the centre. Our team works in Dutch and French.
