Ramillies: Seven Sections, Roman Road and Historic Battle

With 6,394 inhabitants (2018) over 49.08 km² (density 130.3 inh./km²), Ramillies is a French-speaking commune of Walloon Brabant (postal code 1367). The commune comprises seven sections: Autre-Église, Bomal, Geest-Gérompont-Petit-Rosière, Grand-Rosière-Hottomont, Huppaye, Mont-Saint-André and Ramillies-Offus.

History and heritage

The commune is crossed by a historic Roman road linking Bavay to Cologne. On its territory stands the Hottomont tumulus, described as “one of the most significant tumuli in Belgium”.

The Battle of Ramillies

Ramillies is globally associated with the famous Battle of Ramillies (1706), a major victory of John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, against the Franco-Spanish armies during the War of the Spanish Succession. The commune’s name became so emblematic that it was adopted by several British warships HMS Ramillies.

Low density (130 inh./km²) and a large area (49 km²) reflect a pronounced agricultural and rural character, typical of the Brabant Hesbaye. Vast cultivated plateaus, orchards and meadows dominate the landscape.
