The commune is crossed by a historic Roman road linking Bavay to Cologne. On its territory stands the Hottomont tumulus, described as “one of the most significant tumuli in Belgium”.

Ramillies is globally associated with the famous Battle of Ramillies (1706), a major victory of John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, against the Franco-Spanish armies during the War of the Spanish Succession.
