Pajottegem: The New Large Municipality of the Pajottenland

Created on 1 January 2025 from the merger of Galmaarden, Gooik and Herne, Pajottegem has 25,287 inhabitants over 120.16 km² — the largest municipality in Flemish Brabant by area, in the Halle-Vilvoorde arrondissement. About 90% of the territory is green space, 70% of it farmland.

Former municipalities and sections

Galmaarden (1570): with Tollembeek and Vollezele; home to the Sint-Pieterskerk, the Saint Paul chapel (16th century) and the Driscartmolen and Heetveldemolen mills.

Gooik (1755): with Kester, Leerbeek and Oetingen; the Sint-Niklaaskerk has a 12th-century Romanesque tower, and the “De Cam” centre houses the folk music instruments museum.

Herne (1540, Sint-Pieters-Kapelle 1541): with Herfelingen; in 1314 Herne welcomed the first Carthusian monastery of the Low Countries, in the Mark valley.
