Herent: Three Residential Sections Adjacent to Leuven

With 23,081 inhabitants (2025) over 32.74 km² (density 705.08 inh./km²), Herent is a Flemish municipality of Flemish Brabant, in the Leuven arrondissement (postal code 3020). Created by the 1977 merger it comprises three sections: Herent (13,511 inh.), Veltem-Beisem (4,823 inh.) and Winksele (4,747 inh.).

Demographics

The population has seen sustained growth: from 17,673 inhabitants in 1992 to 23,081 in 2025, about +30% over three decades. Age distribution shows 19.86% children (0-17), 59.04% working-age adults and 21.1% seniors — a balanced, family-friendly commune.

Heritage

Painter Felix Van Espen (1817-1857) was born in Herent. The municipal coat of arms, granted on 1 July 1986, features the Virgin Mary with Jesus in the first quarter, lions in the second and third, and floral elements in the fourth.
