History and heritage
The municipality was created by the merger of the former communes of Houwaart, Sint-Joris-Winge, Tielt and Meensel-Kiezegem. A major historic presence was the Ile-Duc monastery, which operated from 1219 until the French Revolution.
The municipal coat of arms, adopted in 1980, features Saint George slaying the dragon, reflecting the patron saint of the region.
