Kapelle-op-den-Bos: Three Sections North of Brussels

With about 9,806 inhabitants (2025) over 15.37 km² (density ~638 inh./km²), Kapelle-op-den-Bos is a Flemish municipality of Flemish Brabant, in the Halle-Vilvoorde arrondissement. Created by the 1977 merger of three former communes, it comprises three sections: Kapelle-op-den-Bos (6,337 inh.), Nieuwenrode (1,853 inh.) and Ramsdonk (1,616 inh.).

Heritage

The municipal coat of arms features “the lion of Brabant and the patron saint, Saint Nicholas”, officially confirmed in 1946 and modified in 1988.

History

Historically, Kapelle-op-den-Bos — comprising ten villages — was part of the Brussels Quarter (historical administration of the Duchy of Brabant).

Sections and profile

Kapelle-op-den-Bos centre : Largest section, municipal core with mixed housing (terraced houses, residential subdivisions, shops).

Nieuwenrode : Section with semi-rural character, mixing family homes, farms and scattered housing.

Ramsdonk : Smallest section, with preserved village character.

The centre retains older terraced houses with mortise locks. Residential subdivisions and villas use multipoint locks and certified cylinders. Farms and rural dwellings in Nieuwenrode and Ramsdonk often retain heavy locks on older doors.
