Kampenhout: Four Sections at the Airport’s Gates

With 12,606 inhabitants (2025) over 33.65 km² under postal code 1910, Kampenhout is a Flemish municipality of Flemish Brabant, in the Halle-Vilvoorde arrondissement, at coordinates 50°56.5’N / 4°33’E. Created by the 1977 merger of four communes, it groups Kampenhout, Berg, Buken and Nederokkerzeel, each retaining its sectional identity.

History and etymology

Kampenhout is first mentioned in 1050 under the name Campenholt — “kamp” referring to an open field and “hout” to a forest. The locality grew from a ducal domain into a settled village, with 18th-century infrastructure improvements.

Historic Beethoven connection

The commune has historical significance regarding composer Ludwig van Beethoven: a genealogical line is traced back to Jean van Beethoven from the late 15th century, an ancestry leading to the composer.
