Jodoigne: Twelfth Most Populous Town of Walloon Brabant

With 14,935 inhabitants (2025) over 73.73 km², Jodoigne is the twelfth most populous town of Walloon Brabant, located about 38 km south-east of Brussels and 50 km north-west of Liège. The municipality groups ten merged sections including Jodoigne centre, Mélin, Piétrain, Zétrud-Lumay, Jauchelette, Dongelberg, Lathuy, Saint-Jean-Geest and Saint-Remy-Geest.

Sections and profile

Jodoigne centre : Historic core around Château Pastur (today city hall) and the Saint-Médard de Jodoigne church with Romanesque architecture. The town is mentioned as early as the 9th century in a charter of Lothair II.

Peripheral villages : The rural and village sections (Piétrain famous for its eponymous pig breed, Mélin, Dongelberg, etc.) retain an agricultural and heritage character.

Heritage

Jodoigne’s heritage includes the Abbey of La Ramée, several chapels and manor houses, along with rich medieval architecture. The town’s name derives from the Latin Geldonia (from terms meaning “sterile rock” and “thorn”).
