Hélécine: Three Villages Midway Between Brussels and Liège

With 3,894 inhabitants (2025) over 16.98 km² (postal code 1357), Hélécine is a small French-speaking commune of Walloon Brabant, in the Nivelles arrondissement, positioned “midway between Brussels and Liège”. Created by the 1 January 1977 merger of three villages, it comprises Neerheylissem (2,267 inh.), Opheylissem (1,056 inh.) and Linsmeau (571 inh.).

Major heritage: Opheylissem Abbey

The commune hosts the Opheylissem Abbey, a former monastery with remarkable 18th-century architecture. The site today hosts cultural events, including light shows in its park.

On the Via Gallia Belgica

Hélécine marks “the first Walloon stage on the Via Gallia Belgica” — the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. This historic dimension draws pilgrims and cultural tourists.
