Grez-Doiceau: Five Sections in the Heart of Walloon Brabant

With 14,014 inhabitants (2025) over 55.55 km² (density 252.26 inh./km²), Grez-Doiceau is a French-speaking commune of Walloon Brabant, in the Nivelles arrondissement. It comprises five sections: Grez-Doiceau (6,975 inh., main centre), Archennes, Biez, Bossut-Gottechain and Néthen.

Archaeological heritage

Major 2002 discovery: a Merovingian necropolis containing 436 tombs from the 5th-7th centuries was unearthed. A particularly remarkable intact burial yielded “the skeleton of a young woman particularly well preserved” adorned with gold jewellery, nicknamed “la Dame de Grez”.

The centre retains older houses with mortise locks. Villas and properties in residential sections (Archennes, Bossut-Gottechain) frequently use multipoint locks, certified cylinders and access-control systems. Farms in the more rural sections (Néthen, Biez) feature heavy locks on older doors.
