Braine-le-Château: Protected Medieval Heritage

With 10,638 inhabitants (2025) over 22.75 km² (density 467.62 inh./km²), Braine-le-Château is a French-speaking commune of Walloon Brabant, located about 25 km south-west of Brussels. The commune comprises two sections: Braine-le-Château (14.45 km², 7,039 inh.) and Wauthier-Braine (8.29 km², 3,599 inh.).

Protected medieval heritage

The village is famous for its classified medieval heritage, including:

• A castle of the counts of Hornes or Château de Robiano dating from the 12th century
• A pillory erected in 1521
• A banal mill documented since 1226
• The bailiff’s house with Renaissance architecture

History

Originally under the jurisdiction of Hainaut rather than Brabant, the settlement evolved from a Merovingian donation to the chapter of Mons into a major seigniorial centre controlled by notable families: Trazegnies, Hornes and later Robiano.
