Boutersem: Six Rural Sections of the Hageland

With about 8,709 inhabitants (2025) over 31.14 km² (density ~280 inh./km²), Boutersem is a Flemish municipality of Flemish Brabant, in the Leuven arrondissement. It comprises six sections: Boutersem (3,197 inh.), Vertrijk (1,111 inh.), Kerkom (1,265 inh.), Roosbeek (1,925 inh.), Neervelp (613 inh.) and Willebringen (582 inh.).

History

A major military engagement took place here during Belgium’s independence struggle: the Battle of Leuven was held on 12 August 1831 in this area, concluding the Ten Days Campaign of the Belgian-Dutch conflict.
