Bertem: Three Sections at Leuven’s Doorstep

With 10,342 inhabitants (2025) over 29.99 km² (density 344.84 inh./km²), Bertem is a Flemish municipality of Flemish Brabant, in the Leuven arrondissement (coordinates 50°51’N / 4°37’E). It has three sections: Bertem (4,922 inh., 10.76 km²), Korbeek-Dijle (853 inh., 4.15 km²) and Leefdaal (4,567 inh., 15.08 km²).

Bertem centre : Most populous municipal core, mixing traditional housing and modern residential subdivisions.

Leefdaal : Largest section by area, predominantly residential with villas and family homes.

Korbeek-Dijle : Smallest section, preserved rural character with scattered housing.

Heritage

Bertem is known for its beautiful Romanesque Saint-Pierre Church from the 11th century, one of the region’s most remarkable medieval religious buildings. Historically, the name “Bertem” refers either to marshlands or to the proper name Beert. The territory was once property of the Abbey of Corbie in France.

The centre retains older houses with mortise locks. Villas and residential subdivisions (especially in Bertem and Leefdaal) use multipoint locks and certified cylinders. The Romanesque Saint-Pierre church (11th century) calls for heritage-respectful interventions. Scattered homes in Korbeek-Dijle often retain more traditional locks.
