Begijnendijk: Two Rural Sections of the Hageland

With 10,642 inhabitants (2025) over 17.66 km² (density 602.77 inh./km²), Begijnendijk is a Flemish municipality of Flemish Brabant, in the Leuven arrondissement (coordinates 51°01’N / 4°47’E). Created by the 1977 merger it comprises two sections: Begijnendijk (5,647 inh., 7.76 km²) and Betekom (4,995 inh., 9.89 km²).

Demographics

Age distribution shows 16.89% children (0-17), 58.64% working-age adults and 24.47% seniors — a commune with a notable senior share.

Heritage

The commune counts the Saint Lucy parish church as its main religious building, and heraldic arms combining elements from the two pre-merger communes. A local cycling race, “Begijnendijk”, operated from 1968 to 2008.
