Tremelo: Birthplace of Saint Damien
With 15,418 inhabitants (2025) over 21.89 km², Tremelo is a Flemish municipality of Flemish Brabant (coordinates 50°59’N / 4°42’E). Created by the merger of Tremelo and Baal, it comprises two sections: Tremelo (9,272 inh.) and Baal (6,146 inh.). The main section includes several localities such as Ninde, Bollo, Kruis and Veldonk.
Historic site of Saint Damien
Saint Damien (Joseph De Veuster, 1840-1889) was born in Ninde, a Tremelo hamlet. As a missionary he worked among leprosy patients in Moloka’i, Hawaii, where he died of leprosy himself. He was canonized as Saint Damien in 2009. His birth-house is preserved as a memorial site in Tremelo.
History
“Tremeloo was formerly under the dependency of the Werchter parish, where Parc Abbey held the church’s patronage.” The parish became independent in 1837, with its Notre-Dame church built in 1781-1783 using stones from demolished chapels.
