Linkebeek: “Little Switzerland” of the Southern Periphery

With 4,646 inhabitants (2025) over 4.19 km², Linkebeek is a very small Flemish facilities commune in Brussels’ southern periphery (Halle-Vilvoorde arrondissement, postal code 1630).

Linguistic status

Linkebeek is one of the six facilities communes of the Brussels periphery: officially Dutch-speaking, it provides French services. Over three quarters of the population were Francophone in 2010. Our team works in French and Dutch.

Geography and identity

The commune is nicknamed “the little Switzerland” due to its picturesque valleys. Its name means “stream with grassy banks,” reflecting the watercourse running through it that feeds into the Senne.

Heritage and notable residents

Linkebeek has attracted many artists over time. Belgian filmmaker André Delvaux lived here and actress Audrey Hepburn stayed about ten years. The commune holds its annual “Bonhomme Hiver” festival each April and has two railway stations.
